Get to Know Host and Writer, Josh!
If you walk into Scores Sports Bar and Grill in Farmington on a Wednesday night, you’ll hear a voice that sounds suspiciously like it belongs on your car radio. That’s because it did.
Meet Josh: a seasoned radio pro turned Marketing Manager and one of the most versatile writers on the Quizzo Trivia team. From his early days at Oakland University’s WXOU to producing for 97.1 and overseeing radio markets across the Midwest, Josh brings a level of broadcast polish—and “spicy” wit—to the Farmington trivia scene that you won’t find anywhere else.
From the Airwaves to the Trivia Booth
After over a decade in the radio industry, Josh transitioned into the world of industrial marketing at JDC (Jack Doheny Company), but he couldn’t leave the microphone behind entirely.
“I always thought of myself as the friend in your passenger seat on the ride home when I was on radio,” Josh says. “I still try to convey that feeling from the booth. The difference is that I can get to know the teams and players in person, which is awesome!”
The "Spring Equinox" of Sports
Josh is our resident flag-bearer for Sports Trivia. While he loves writing about the MCU, Harry Potter, and science, his heart beats for the “Spring Equinox”—that magic window where March Madness, MLB Opening Day, The Masters, and the NFL Draft all collide.
“I’ll bear the flag that sports belong in trivia,” Josh explains. “In almost every other trivia game I’ve ever played, sports had a place. I like to include it with questions that resonate with local fans without getting too far into the weeds.”
The Secrets to "Home-Run" Trivia
With a background in talent strategy and audience engagement, Josh knows exactly how to keep a room of players hooked. To him, the “anatomy” of a perfect question is simple: Give the crowd a chance.
The Players are the All Stars
Josh believes that the audience should ENJOY the game, not feel overwhelmed by it.
“People don’t come to trivia to feel stumped. They come to prove their knowledge and score points.”
The "Dud" vs. the "Home Run"
Josh watches the teams to help inspire his material. If there’s no discussion, the question is a dud.
“I love watching teams debate answers and make their case to each other. When they work it out until they find the right answer? That’s a home run.”
Escaping from the real world and into the Game
Having worked a multitude of jobs, and spending his days busy with his own career, Josh understands the value of a night out (and off).
“They don’t come to think about the 9-5. They come to escape. My job is to make them smile.”
What to Expect: Impossible IBQs & "Spicy Josh"
If you’re heading to Scores in Farmington for the first time, you should know that Josh runs a tight, high-energy ship. He’s famous for his impossible Individual Bonus Questions (IBQs)—questions so niche they are meant to be guessed, not known.
“Just write down a number you think makes sense! I usually don’t pick on you for your guesses… unless you think Jurassic Park came out 116 years ago.”
And a word to the wise: Josh loves “returning the crap” players give him. His regulars at Scores—like Rocket Surgery, Duckworthy, Too Young To Retire, and Blue Team—know that “Spicy Josh” is part of the fun.
